Disintegration poems
Poems inspired by the classic album from 1989
If you were to ask me my favorite album of all time, I’d probably respond that it’s too difficult to pick only one. There is so much great music out there and so many fantastic albums I still have yet to listen to. But if I had no other choice but to list the album I hold dearest to my heart it would be Disintegration by The Cure from 1989.
Few songwriters know how to craft such deep, consuming. and melancholic soundscapes like Robert Smith, and even fewer singer possess a voice capable of making every word reach your soul so profoundly and effortlessly.
The lyrics to this album have haunted me for a long time. The following poems are an attempt to interpret, rearrange, and create something new from Smith’s lyrics.
Hope you enjoy!
* These poems have multiple citations from Robert Smith and are created from the framework of various songs from the album ‘‘Disintegration'‘ by The Cure. Thus I cannot claim full authorship of these poems.
Disintegration poems
Dreaming of you: I feel it all fading and paling and I’m begging In the cold It’s like the cold if you were dead My hands upon my head a shaking and a shaking in your bed I feel like i’m being eaten Eaten day after day— I’ll never lose this pain Never dream of you again Never fly on your wings For the wind howls It blows and blows Goes on like— It’s the end of the world It’s like the cold if you were dead In our mortal reign It shall never rain again I’ll never dream of you again I’ll never lose this pain The edge of the world: We are living on the edge of the world Living in each others gazes My hands before my fading eyes The strangest twist upon your lips I will kiss you forever My hands upon your hips Shaking and shaking blissfully we kiss I would kiss you forever If only we could be together Instead You hopelessly drift The eyes of The ghosts catch us again Clinging on to hope as I feel Like I’m being eaten A thousand shivering furry holes Swallowing us— Around the earth we go We are living on the edge of the world Prayers for rain: Your eyes upon me Inflicting An infectious sense of hopelessness You pray for rain yet nowhere does time glow All of our lives And Nothing to show for it You pray for rain In our intimate hour Finding ourselves Killing time again Touch me like you mean it Let our bodies sink Sink deeper and deeper Prayers for rain Amongst our hopelessness Killing time again Your touch A touch— so plain So stale it kills You pray for rain Killing time again It’s cold Like the cold if you were dead It’s just the way you smile I said Just the two of us— Killing time again Just the two of us praying for rain

I am not very familiar with their music, but I can still see the skeleton of the leitmotif of disintegration through this love that consumes and time that doesn’t forgive. Looks like a great way exercise your lyrical transfiguration muscle. 💪🏻
I really like using lyrics as inspiration, or is this adaptation? In either case I enjoyed it
