Seasons In Decay — A Haiku Collection
by Rasmus Rosenkrantz
Blue Sky, Emily Carr, 1936
Ouverture:
old man
tearing pages
from expired calendars
*
past seasons recall
passed sensations.
*
in the garden
stands a tree
from bygone eras
*
dead are the leaves
gone are the days.
*
the branches call
to the past—
no one listens
*
storms are gathering
tempests form in the distance.
*
thunder and lightning—
immense noise
infinite quiet
*
an open sky
exposed lilies.
*
old clockworks
moving defiantly
towards future days
*
clock strikes the hour—
no sound is made.
*
the man whispers
to the wind
in solitude
*
his secret is kept
til fall comes.
Winter Landscape by Vassily Kandinsky, 1909
Winter dew
tears of dew
falling from winter grass—
a premature spring.
*
snowflakes in May—
a wet gush
lingering in the wind.
*
dead flowers resurrecting—
a barren land
breathing too early—again.
*
daffodils and crocus
disintegrating simultaneously
in the endless summer.
*
white gardens
hide the colours
of spring.
*
the trees and the wind
have been speaking—
a change lurks.
*
scared squirrels
hiding in the trees—
remnants of winter.
*
evergreen leaves
no longer flowing—
the still air.
*
young tulips
greet the old jasmine—
a blooming season.
"Sunlight and Shadow: The Newbury Marshes by Martin Johnson Heade, 1875
Intermezzo
dead seeds
now fermenting
in cold earth
*
empty forests—
hid trees.
*
wet earth
no longer inviting
any life
*
dormant plants—
starved bees.
*
snow carcasses
scattered across
hostile lands
*
choked wind—
hot airwaves.
*
highly peaking
landscapes sinking
into the ground
*
waters rising
spirits floating down.
Kumoi-Zakura (Kumoi Cherry Trees) by Hiroshi Yoshida, 1920
Spring Light
setting sun
on young beech—
shivering leaves.
*
green grass
and yellow crops—
sunday sunrise.
*
carried by the wind
going nowhere —
folioles swaying.
*
dawn delayed—
the lingering sun
of yesterday.
*
whispers reach
remote trees
in abandoned fields.
*
birds flying
into the summer
of endless nights.
*
smoke rising
from the forest—
fear of August.
*
nocturnal spirits
flee from the
decaying light.
*
sun and moon—
a dance macabre
in twilight.
*
children playing
from dusk til dawn—
illuminated evenings.
Tahitian Landscape by Paul Gauguin, 1891
Summer Air
a desolate oak
silently pleading—
dreams of fall.
*
ghost particles —
branches disappearing
into the barren field.
*
forest sun
no longer keeping
any company.
*
an abandoned house
discovered by the burning
light of night.
*
dogwood groves
solemnly howling
as summer ends.
*
submerged again
into murky waters—
a flourishing autumn.
*
half colours
slowly dyeing—
new coat of paint.
*
hot air lingering
on cold leaves—
memories of summer.
Autumn Boulevard, Paris by Childe Hassam, 1886
Autumn Snow
wet air—
snowflakes melting
as they fall.
*
full moon
shining on white
signs of winter.
*
the trees
have been whispering—
a cold lurks.
*
dead leaves
buried beneath
layers of snow.
*
deep indentations
in the woods—
angels of autumn.
*
white beech
already sleeping—
winter fatigue.
*
blowing wind
brushing away
the emerging season.
Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, 1565
Coda
ghosts wandering
the empty streets—
spirits float
*
upwards into infinity—
hollow light
*
twilight's the curtain
calling from morning
of early dreams
*
sleep without wake
endless days
*
day and night
banishing the minutes
and the hours
*
sandcorns running out
into the sea
*
waves carrying
still sleeping bodies—
midnight conjurers
*
an esoteric moon
posseses the starlight
*
explosions of light—
an infinite timeline—
endless winter
*
deathless transition
into the void
*
seasons in decay—
the sun shining
in vain
*
dark airwaves
overflowing at night
*
dormant shadows shelter
the tired last breaths
of dying backwoods
*
slow death leaves a
lasting memory of pain.

Thanks for reading!
Lovely sequence Rasmus! Very nice flow and interactions amongst the lines!
It was tough to pick but I think my favourites were: "dormant shadows shelter / the tired lasts breaths / of dying backwoods" and "old clockworks / moving defiantly / towards future days" Btw, the Emily Carr painting you featured caught my eye. Here in British Columbia we see her works in many exhibits. Great collection you've made here, and the pictures suited the vibes perfectly!
